Do you remember the ‘Egg Drop’ exercise from school or work? This was the one where groups of five colleagues are given a limited variety of supplies (e.g. popsicle sticks, grocery bag, scotch tape) and assigned the task of creating the ’safest’ capsule for dropping an egg from two-story height.

Ye' Old Egg Drop by Eric Charlton on FlickrThis team-building exercise teaches participants the importance of trust, creativity, efficiency, and patience - morals that must be applied to any workplace project.  Whether we are tasked with developing a new corporate web presence or executing a critical marketing campaign it serves us well to think back to the ‘egg drop’ for lessons.

In the ‘real world’ we also have limited resources, including intangible resources like human capital and time.  So the most successful businesses allow a free-and-open exchange of ideas and information throughout their organization.  While an executive assumes that a project’s success can only be met with additional funding, an intern may have a creative approach for making the most efficient use of resources that are currently accessible.

At risk of being cliché I’ll wrap up with these timeless words: Think outside the box.
